Utopia Lagos
Utopia Lagos
11B Goriola street
Victoria Island Lagos
I stumbled upon this place by chance, I was supposed to have dinner with a friend at Backyard Lagos, but I wasn't aware of their opening hours thing on Sunday. So on recommendation from another friend, we made our way to Utopia.
Food
I decided to do the 'Fish and Chips test', basically I use this to test the might of the restaurant's kitchen. Most restaurants I have been to in Lagos serve quickly defrosted fish, beer batter it and table it. Wasn't disappointed here as they did the same thing, even more annoying they included a line in the menu that the fish was "freshly breaded". I wonder how it would have tasted if it wasn't fresh. My friend had a chicken dish, he didn't quite like it and left it to waste.

Out of curiosity I opted to visit here again, this time for a friend's birthday dinner. I decided to have as much as was possible so I could take a final decision on how much I appreciated this restaurant. Friend is a Pasta person, so she had one of the variants available. Extremely cheesy dish in a pan, she liked it. It looked good too. I decided to try the 'Sampler Platter', and a Burger (no one messes up a burger). The platter has a few pieces of everything, (shrimps, spring rolls, cheese sticks, chicken kebab, wings, etc) it was quite nice with its numerous dips. The burger was just okay (took out the patty, left the bun).
Random: Why do they split the bun leaving so little at the base and so much on top? Messes with the structural integrity of a Burger, makes it an uncomfortable pain to handle.
Ambience
Utopia had a very good vibe both times I was there. The music is amazing (80s blast), semi comfy seats, and very helpful waiting staff. I tipped both waiters that attended to me on the separate visits. Location feels more like a after-work drink spot to me. Hope they have good drinks. If it is a rainy day when you want to visit, take your SUV cause the roads are a serious mess.
Cost
Prices here are a bit Island like, reminds me of when I'm going through the menu at Bungalow restaurant. You're not getting much for the paper you're shedding ultimately. The birthday dinner for two was a few kobo shy of N30,000, crazy cause it made no specific impression on me afterwards.

Experience
Aside from the Platter I had, every other thing didn't bang. Funny thing is that I have asked for opinions from friends who have also visited, and they felt the same way. I'm guessing the food appeals to a very specific crop of people, I haven't met anyone from that sect yet.
